Abstract

Abstract

This study compares the forecasting performance of classical time series models and machine learning algorithms in short-term monthly inflation forecasting for Türkiye. Using monthly data for the period 2014:05-2026:04, ARIMA and SARIMAX models are evaluated against Random Forest and XGBoost algorithms. The dependent variable is the monthly logarithmic inflation rate calculated from the consumer price index. Explanatory variables include domestic producer prices, the USD/TRY exchange rate, the interest rate, the industrial production index, and Brent crude oil prices, representing cost pressures, exchange rate pass-through, financial conditions, real economic activity, and external cost factors, respectively. Since the data have a time series structure, the training-test split is not random. The period 2014:05-2024:04 is used as the initial training period, while 2024:05-2026:04 is reserved as the test period. Forecasts are generated through an expanding-window one-step-ahead forecasting scheme and model performances are compared using MAE, RMSE, and MAPE. The empirical results show that the ARIMA model provides the lowest forecasting errors, followed closely by SARIMAX. In contrast, Random Forest and XGBoost produce relatively higher errors under the current data structure. These findings suggest that although machine learning algorithms offer considerable potential for inflation forecasting, classical time series models may remain highly competitive and even superior in small or medium-sized monthly macroeconomic datasets, particularly when short-term forecasting is the main objective.
