Abstract

Abstract

This study examines exporters’ preferences for delivery terms (Incoterms®) and the risk perceptions influencing these decisions by employing a qualitative research method. Incoterms®, which regulate the allocation of costs, responsibilities, and risks in international trade, play a decisive role in firms’ operational efficiency and competitive advantage. Exporters’ delivery term preferences are shaped not only by logistical factors but also by strategic objectives, market conditions, and organizational capacity. Within the scope of the research, in-depth interviews were conducted with representatives of two manufacturing firms engaged in export activities. The findings reveal that customer trust, payment methods, and geographical conditions are considered the primary determinants in delivery term selection. In transactions with new customers, exporters tend to choose delivery terms requiring lower responsibility, such as EXW, in order to avoid risk. In contrast, in long-term and trust-based business relationships, delivery terms such as DAP and FOB—although involving higher risk—are preferred to maintain greater operational control. The study identifies the DDP delivery term as the most financially risky and least preferred option due to uncertainties related to customs procedures and tax liabilities. Additionally, incorrect Incoterms® selection is found to lead to unexpected additional costs, port delays, and customer dissatisfaction. Overall, the results indicate that firms rely more on field experience than on theoretical knowledge when making delivery term decisions. Accordingly, it is recommended that exporters receive regular training and conduct risk analyses aligned with the logistical conditions of their target markets to enhance operational security.
